Talking Strength Training on Dig It with Jo Whiley & Zoe Ball

I was delighted to join Jo Whiley and Zoe Ball on their Dig It podcast to talk about one of my favourite subjects: strength training, and why it's one of the best investments we can make in our health as we move through midlife and beyond.

Whether you're already active or wondering where to start, I hope our conversation leaves you feeling inspired and reassured that building strength doesn't have to be complicated. It's never too late to begin, and the benefits go far beyond how we look.

Why strength training matters

Many of us spend years focusing on cardio, counting calories or trying to weigh less. But one of the biggest predictors of how well we'll age is something much simpler: maintaining our strength.

From our 30s onwards, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass. During and after the menopause, this process accelerates, making strength training more important than ever. The good news is that our bodies respond incredibly well to resistance exercise, whatever our age or experience.

Building strength can help you:

  • Maintain muscle and bone health.

  • Improve balance and stability.

  • Support healthy joints.

  • Increase energy and resilience.

  • Make everyday activities easier.

  • Feel more confident in your body.

Strength isn't about lifting the heaviest weights or spending hours in the gym. It's about giving your body what it needs to stay healthy, capable and independent for years to come.

Small changes make a big difference

One of the things we discussed on the podcast is that exercise doesn't have to mean a long workout.

I often encourage people to think about adding small moments of strength throughout the day. A few squats while the kettle boils. Carrying the shopping with purpose. Standing up and sitting down without using your hands. These simple habits soon add up.

The best exercise programme isn't the most complicated one.

It's the one you'll actually keep doing.

It's never too late to start

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is: "I wish I'd started years ago."

Of course, starting earlier is wonderful.

But starting today is what really matters.

Our bodies are remarkably adaptable. With the right guidance and a consistent approach, it's possible to become stronger, move better and feel more confident at almost any stage of life.
